Veterans Recovery Center
My Father's War, Creative Writing Residency - 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
260 Glenis Drive
Murfreesboro, TN 37130
Price: Free

This was the final meeting of the Residency that started with the performance on October 21st. We met every Friday, excepting holidays. Veterans choose which offerings at the Veterans Recovery Center in which they wish to participate. Our group ranged from 15 to 2 participants, but all returned at least three times.  At the last meeting, we found out why folks didn't come every Friday - the work was too intense. They said they just needed more recovery time or decompression time in between the writing sessions. We talked about alternative formats with the veterans and then with some of the staff. Early in 2017, we're going to start a residency (with a performance of My Father's War, as always, seguing into discussion and a short time for writing). We'll meet the following week for the first full writing workshop. After that, we'll meet only once a month - BUT, between gatherings, Robert and I will send weekly reminders about what happened at the most recent meeting, then include a writing "prompt" for the current week. That way, we hope to maintain continuity and contact without overwhelming anyone - including us. We can't wait to see how it works. We are so grateful to the staff of the Veterans Recovery Center in Murfreesboro for giving us the opportunity to pilot these workhops. We are all very excited about the possibilities moving forward.

James H. Quillen VA Medical Center
My Father's War - 6:00 PM
2203 McKinley Road
Johnson City, TN 37604
Price: Free

We so love performing in VAs, for the veterans, their families, and for the staff and administration. There are always significant moments and meetings at these events. At this performance was a Vietnam veteran (two tours) in a wheelchair who sat very still and looked down for most of the performance. After the discussion, in which his wife participated, Robert went up to introduce himself. This veteran took Robert's hand in both of his and held it to his face, weeping, and repeating, "Thank you, thank you, thank you...."  We are doing what we are supposed to be doing.

The Rose Center
My Father's War - 7:00 PM
442 W 2nd N ST
Morristown, TN 37814
Price: $10.00, free for veterans

Our dear friends, Henry and Cindy Selby, owners of Board and Staff Consulting, produced the performance in Morristown for us. Since we had a paid gig, we, as always, looked for the closest veterans facility for which to do a free performance. The local chapter of the DAR provided a lovely selection of refreshments (including some really wonderful cookies) for a reception following the performance and discussion. Board and Staff also arranged a performance the next night at the VA in Johnson City.

Veterans Recovery Center
My Father's War - 1:00 PM
260 Glenis Drive
Murfreesboro, TN 37130
Price: free

This was the performance that kicked off our first long-term residency in a VA facility. The response was dynamic, heartbreaking, and uplifting - and the mental health professionals immediately saw how my fathers story works with veterans who are having trouble with reintegration. It was a very potent beginning for the weekly creative writing workshops that followed. Thank you again to Sherry Walker for introducing and promoting our work to the enormous VA in Murfreesboro, TN. This performance specifically was for the veterans and staff at the Veterans Recovery Center.

This will be our fourth performance at MTSU, including the event sponsored on Veterans' Day by VSA Arts Tennessee in 2009. As part of a larger celebration, we performed about 20 minutes of stories from Dad's memoir with a couple of songs for emotional/musical context. The audience response to this taste of his story told us that we had to create My Father's War. Thank you, MTSU and Lori Kissinger (Executive Director of VSA Tennessee) for the spark that started it all.

My Father's War with Creative Writing Workshop - 11:00 AM
Murfreesboro, TN 37132
Price: Free

Sherry Walker, PhD, LCSW, TVHA/PTSD, put together a performance, discussion, and short writing workshop for mental health professionals from several different programs of the Veterans Administration's Alvin C. York (Murfreesboro, TN) campus. These eight professionals took an extended lunch break in order to participate. After performance and workshop, we asked them how My Father's War might fit into their current programming. They were on fire with ideas. This resulted in our first weeks-long residency (at the Veterans Recover Center) later in the fall - and other performances, workshops, and residencies are in the works for 2017. Thank you, Sherry, for your ongoing friendship and support! This was a huge breakthrough for our mission of healing and reintegration for veterans.

They found us on Facebook almost two years ago and invited us to be a part of their biannual reunion. We will perform after the dinner on Saturday night. We are honored and humbled for the opportunity to reflect their story through my father, Herschel Ponder's, words and the music that goes with them.

The University of the South
The Outside Inn Reunion - 6:15 pm
Convocation Hall
Sewanee, TN 37375

This reunion, for which I performed some of my Appalachian Roots repertoire, was organized by Henry and Cindy Selby - and wildly successful. About 130 alumnae and friends gathered to celebrate the music and the life of a student-run coffee house started on campus in 1971, our freshman year.  Robert heard me sing for the first time there. It was a euphoric two-day gathering with over five hours of concert music both Friday and Saturday nights and impromptu rehearsals and gatherings throughout. Grounded in music and people who love it, the time was sweetly nostalgic and, for many, both affirming and cathartic. Interestingly, conversations were more about our lives' journeys and the present than the past that brought us together. Henry and Cindy are already planning for next year - and we've all offered to help!

Richland Place
My Father's War - 6:00 pm
500 Elmington Avenue
Nashville, TN 37205

We were welcomed so graciously by an enthusiastic audience and caring staff. There were three WWII veterans including a B-17 crew member, commander of a landing craft from the Normandy Invasion, and one who served in the Pacific Theater - as well as veterans from other wars and many who kept the home fires burning. The general discussion was both beautiful and deeply moving and, as always, individuals and small groups continued to share with us afterwards.

Richard Winn Academy
My Father's War, with voice workshop for Mary Jeffcoat's acting class - performance at 1:00 pm, workshop at 3:00 pm
1796 Old Chester Road
Winnsboro, SC 29180
Price: No admission, students and faculty only

The quality of the students' attention and responses during both performance and discussion affirmed yet again how well My Father's War captures middle and high school students. With only a short time to spend with the Drama Club, we focused on how actors use their voices, opening up the myriad of choices available to them. It was appropriate since My Father's War is storytelling with music in readers theater format - and our voices are our primary tools.  Thank you, Head of School, Henry Selby (whom we met as students at The University of the South, Sewanee, TN in the early 1970s) for inviting us to share with Richard Winn.

Francis Marion University, Fine Arts Building
My Father's War - Creative Writing Workshop - 2:00
Price: Students only

The students were wonderful - engaged and productive throughout our time together.  I took them through a simple creative writing process - gathering information in freewriting, discussion, choosing a theme, then crafting a short poem distilled from the freewriting. It is a simple process that has very complex results, grounded in their observations about and responses to My Fathers War, as well as their own experiences, opinions, and insights into the effects of war on individuals.  Several students stayed to talk afterwards, but one young woman's comment affected us deeply. Beaming, she said that she wrote non-fiction and essays very well and that her teachers had been encouraging her to branch out into creative writing. She said that she had tried and couldn't find a way to start, but, "I can DO THIS!" We had given her more than we had imagined. It was one of those golden moments for teacher and student, co-learners together.
